Frederick McGhee

On this date, we mark the birth of , a Black lawyer and civil rights activist, in Mississippi, in 1861.

His father could read and write, and passed down to him the benefits of education. As a youngster, the family moved to Knoxville, TN, where he attended school with help from the Freedmen’s Bureau and the Presbyterian Church. Later he went to Chicago and worked as a waiter to pay for law school, graduating in 1885. Check out more http://www.aaregistry.com/detail.php?id=1955
